Banking association campaigns for clean oceans with mobile game

Vaduz/Zug - The Liechtenstein Bankers Association is seeking to harness the power of gaming to meet its sustainability aims. In partnership with the start-up Operal Gaming, it has developed the online game Ocean Cleanup to mark World Ocean Day 2023, through which plastic is recovered from oceans in the real world.

The Liechtenstein Bankers Association (LBA) and the Zug-based gaming start-up Operal have launched a jointly developed online game by the name of Ocean Cleanup to mark World Ocean Day (June, 8th), which is also available on Google Play. In the game, the players collect bottles, shoes and car tires floating in the sea. The best players are rewarded with real certificates for the removal of plastic from real seas. These are provided by Barcelona-based web 3.0 ecosystem Plastiks. It represents a real-world connection to genuine projects around the world that seek to remove plastic from the oceans.

The participation of the LBA in this project is another pillar of its ESG (environmental, social, governance) strategy. “As financial institutions, we have a responsibility to promote sustainable practices and support initiatives that protect the environment. We hope that this game will raise awareness about the importance of ocean conservation and inspire players to take action”, comments Simon Tribelhorn, CEO of the Liechtenstein Bankers Association, in a press release issued by his organization. The project underlines “the potential for businesses, particularly in the finance sector, to leverage mobile games for #ESG and #CSR initiatives”, as Operal writes in a LinkedIn post.

Founded in 2021, the company operates at the interface between technology, entertainment and social responsibility. “Our ambition is to gameify impact. Ocean Cleanup perfectly represents this vision, and the Liechtenstein Bankers Association is the ideal partner to spread the message about corporate responsibility in environmental issues”, explains Toni Caradonna, President of the Board of Operal, in the LBA press release. ce/mm
